Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS) are biologically, chemically and thermally extremely stable as well as water and grease repellent. Due to these technical properties, they have been used for decades in the production of textiles, electronics, paper coatings, paints, fire-fighting foam and ski wax.
This widespread use has become a serious problem for humans and the environment. The stability of these compounds and their decomposition products causes them to accumulate in the environment and has given them the name "forever chemicals".
The reliable analysis of PFAS necessitates suitable material.
PFAS are present at the sampling site, in the analysing laboratory in the equipment or auxiliary materials used. The sample should not be contaminated by these background sources. In addition, PFAS can adhere to certain materials, such as glass, and the usual PTFE-coated septa are also not suitable for PFAS analysis.
