Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are aromatic compounds, which contain two to seven hydrocarbon rings. PAH result in the environment from natural processes (forest fires, volcanic eruption) or from incomplete combustion of organic material such as wood, coal, oil or tobacco. PAH are well soluble in fat and oil and bind to dust particles; they concentrate in organisms and the environment.
Consumers get in contact with PAH via contaminated rubber and plastic products, abrasion from rubber products, floor covering or wood preservatives. The human body is affected by PAH through tobacco smoke, air containing PAH and the consumption of contaminated food such as grilled or smoked food.
PAH are everywhere and can be carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or toxic to reproduction. Because of this significant environmental impact, methods for their detection were defined.
was especially developed for the fast and efficient separation of PAH compounds. It is an excellent choice for laboratories that analyse food and water samples for PAH compounds.
