Determining Oechsle Degrees with a Measuring Cylinder

The Oechsle degree (°Oe) is used to determine the sugar content in must (must weight) or berries. This involves comparing the weight of one liter of must to one liter of water at 17.5°C. The measurement is typically performed using a refractometer. For example, one liter of must with 76 °Oe weighs 1.076 g/ml.

This measurement can also be simulated using a 250 ml measuring cylinder and a kitchen scale with a precision of 0.1 g. To do this, fill the measuring cylinder with exactly 250 ml of must or wine and read the mass in grams. If the scale shows a mass of 271.5 g, you can calculate the density as follows: 271.5 g ÷ 250 ml = 1.086 g/ml, which corresponds to 86 °Oe.
